DESCRIPTION:EDGELANDS\nPerforming Architectures in 3 Acts\n–\nSaturday 18 November 2017\, 11am – 5 pm\nBrewery Tap (UCA Project Space)\n53 Tontine Street\, Folkestone\, CT20 1JR\n–\nA trilogy of architectural performances\, panel discussion\, exhibition & publication that explores ideas of the ‘place’ in the unique context of Folkestone. \nImage courtesy: Matt Rowe \nACT 1\n‘WRITING THE CITY’\nA panel discussion on ‘Place\, Architecture & Performance’\n–\n11am – 2 pm | Brewery Tap\n–\nMatthew Butcher \nHolly Lewis \nGabor Stark \nBrigitte Orinsinski \nMatt Rowe \nMegan Groth (Chair) \n– \nThe discussion aims to explore some of the ideas discussed in the essay\, ‘A Global Sense of Place’ by Doreen Massey\, and about places and its cultural re-constructions through planned narratives\, local voices and displacement\, and the carnivalesque. These are urgent questions for Folkestone at this pinnacle of radical transformation and the current Folkestone Triennal plays a large part in new waves of cultural-led regeneration. Set in these contexts\, we would like to have an open and critical reflection on that changes taking place\, how it is experienced as part of everyday lives and how one can creatively and actively respond to them. \nACT 2\n‘Folkestone Masque’\nPerformative Architectures – Unit J \n–\n1 – 2 pm | Feast\n2:30 – 5pm | Ensemble in Brewery Tap\n–\nAct 1 – Radio Controlled Car Racing\nAct 2 – ‘Finding Eanswythe’ Storey Teliing Pavillions\nAct 3 – Acoustic Ensemble \n– \nThe Folkestone Masque is developed by HOP Projects\, in conversations with Declan\, Matt Rowe\, Kevin and Andy. The starting point of the exploration will be Grit in the Oyster\, a body of work by Matt Rowe that represents the often overlooked rituals and aesthetics of carnivaleque culture in the traditional British seaside resort. It reflects a cultural space where the conventions and boundaries of socially acceptable behaviour or reckless hedonism could become blurred. \nWorking as a team\, Unit J at Oxford Brookes University will present an elaborate and temporary stage-set ensemble\, made out of mobile/wearable components\, capturing a seaside resort in ‘permanent off-season’… \n \n
